The tax accounting impact of return-to-provision (“RTP”) adjustments (also known as return-to-accrual adjustments or true-ups) should be recorded in the period identified. Adjustments may be identified or finalized in the period income tax returns are filed assuming they are not known in an earlier reporting period. For calendar-year companies, returns are due in the fourth quarter and companies finalize RTP adjustments at that time.
This session is designed to provide provide basic understanding of RTP and how it impacts the companies bottom line.

ASC 740 governs how companies recognize the effects of income taxes on their financial statements under U.S. GAAP. This applies only to taxes based on income—not sales, payroll, or property taxes—per ASC 740-10.

Calculating the provision for income taxes under ASC 740 presents a difficult technical challenge. The session is designed to provide a good understanding of ASC 740 and also offer practical guide about how to implement changes as a result of ASC 740.
